Bongoan – A Bong & Goan Restaurant – Quick Review

Bongoan, located just off E.M. Bypass on Jadavpur Connector offers a unique combination of Bengali and Goan Cuisine under the same roof. While the facade looked pretty warm and inviting, the combination of neon green and bright yellow interior and bluish light left me a little cold. The staff  however, was warm and accommodating.
For starters we ordered
  • Sesame Fried Prawn, Continental Style (Rs 300)
  • Lottya Fry (Bombay duck) (Rs 120)
  • Spicy Chilly Baby Corn (Rs 90)
Baby Corn

Sesame PrawnLottya Fry

The baby corn dish was way too spicy and the heat was all I could taste, and while the Lottya (Bombay Duck) Fry was an innovative addition to the menu, I found the batter too thick.
The prawns, however demand a special mention – with just the right kind of spices and just the right amount of heat this dish was everyone’s favorite!

For main course we ordered
  • Pork Bhuni (Rs 150)
  • Chicken Xacutti (Rs 200)
  • MuttonVindaloo (Rs 250)
Pork Bhuna

The Chicken Xacutti was the best of the lot, hands down – all of us quite enjoyed this coconutty dish which had just the right balance of spices and heat. The Mutton Vindaloo was just a little too tangy and had a weird zing. The pork dish was light and flavorful, but the pork pieces were a little tough.

Bebinca

Bebinca (Rs 120) – the classic Goan dish was our choice for dessert for the night. Unfortunately, it was a huge let down and nothing close to the traditional, layered Goan pudding.

The staff was very prompt in playing “Happy Birthday” while a fellow blogger cut her birthday cake ( a sweet gesture) and took a lot of trouble in making sure that our group photo came out nice.. almost makes me forget their tardiness in service.
